Engine test a green light.
by omni on Mon Apr 10, 2006 1:39 pm
It would seem the blog engine is working properly now. Time to start working on the user interface - I've tested NewTek's Lightwave 3D v8.5 and found it to be pretty excellent, but before I go too far I'll try AutoDesk's 3D Studio Max v8 and Alias Maya v7 to see if either of them have a more intuitive interface.

If I hadn't taken a 3D animation course in highschool where I learned an early version of Lightwave I don't think I'd be able to muddle through it without spending some serious time sifting through tutorials. Bleh.

More to come.

Modelling environments reviewed...
by omni on Tue Apr 11, 2006 12:24 pm
Alright I've spent my evening and morning testing out two of the modelling environments mentioned here. My reviews:

Lightwave seems to be wholely the most powerful, with the most options for fine detail. However its interface is not very intuitive - the modelling and animation shops are two separate programs. This means if you've modelled all your objects and you've composed your entire animation scene with lights and backgrounds etc, then decide you want to crunch down an object by 10% of its vertical height, you have to open the modeller program, make your edit, re-save the object, go back to the animator, and replace the object with the new one. Also, your basic movement dynamics don't seem to be quite as intuitively implemented as in the next program on the list, Alias Maya.

All I can say about Alias Maya is 'wow'. Shocked *VERY* intuitive, your modelling and animation is all done in one environment, so if you have a bouncing ball it's *VERY* easy to add proper manipulation effects like having the ball squash down when it bounces. The actual operation in Maya is much more intuitive as well - they seem to have spent a lot of time thinking about how they can make the usage easier, faster, and more efficient. Hold the space bar and a customizable pop-up hotmenu appears. By default the hotmenu has all the menu items for whichever mode you're in (ie, if you're in modelling mode the hotmenu will show all the modelling-related menus) so you don't have to travel all the way up to the menu bar. Hotkey assignments seem to be thought out better in Maya than in Lightwave too.

After sinking my teeth into Maya I have no clue why anyone would use anything else unless they were a complete industry pro and wanted finer control over small details while willing to sacrifice the extra manhours to get the project done in Lightwave. I'm utterly impressed with Maya and at this point, see no need to review 3D Studio Max. If anyone out there wants to reply with a rant about how good 3DSMax is, maybe I'll give it a whirl.

Wtf is with technology these days?
by omni on Wed Apr 12, 2006 1:53 am
I mean, here we are in the 21st century and we still don't have software that can take a few minutes of video footage and use it to generate a 3D-modelled scene with objects? Even if it didn't create proper NURBS objects or anything, just generic sprites for each element in the scene, which the user could then alter and manipulate.

That doesn't seem so far-fetched does it? Then again, neither does a voting system where every citizen can cast a vote on every bill that goes through the house of commons via web poll, but I doubt I'll see that in the next 5 years... Rolling Eyes

I knew I'd get a fair bit of strays with the domain ROFL.net but I had no idea just how many.

Last night I installed a hit counter for when ROFL.net is officially launched to the public. Today I decided I'd check it to see if any of my friends had visited while I slept in this morning.

Wow. Shocked 11 unique visits so far (one of those being me @ localhost).

I mean it's not like we had a thousand visitors overnight, but we haven't done any advertising, any cross-linking, or even listed ourselves in any search engines yet. To have had 10 unique visitors in as many hours without any kind of publication - really makes me wonder what kind of potential the site will have once it's actually finished and ready for the general public!

Slow speeds, speedy solutions
by omni on Thu Apr 13, 2006 12:16 am
Ok so the time has come for a server upgrade, as is made evident by the slowww load times, even on the local machine.

By Sunday night the new server should be assembled and configured - hopefully by then I'll have finished at least the visual half of the user interface, if not the code end as well.

Further developments: Upon spending a few hours in Maya I've found that though it has a lot of really user-friendly options, the limitations it brings with it are enough to make me want to look into 3D Studio Max - I'm expecting a similar experience and am preparing to resolve myself to nitting and gritting through Lightwave. Probably for the best.

Enough dev talk!

New interface implemented
by omni on Thu Apr 27, 2006 9:24 am
So as you can probably tell, I've implemented the new visual style. Still a few elements left to complete, such as the Archives section and the CSS formatting. Any comments/suggestions on what's up so far?

Booya gramma!
by omni on Sat Apr 29, 2006 1:07 pm
KaPOW! It's DONE! At least, I think it is. I've decided to leave the forum and back-end of the site as it is with the grey and blue 'Artemis' theme, but the ROFL visual style has been applied to the Search and Login pages, and the Archives section has been created and seems to test properly. Won't know for sure until the first post is made in May and then a post is made in 2007. Until then, looks like we're running smoothely! Very Happy
